Sorullitos De Maiz de Puerto Rico (Corn Fritters) Sweet and Savory! A must try.

Sorullitos de Maiz! or Corn Fritters in English are so delicious.

Added my dipping sauce recipe as well. Enjoy!

I'm going to show you how I make these and how you can make the in various ways. Very traditional of Puerto Rico. Many make them with cheese in the middle (sooo good!) but not so many people know how versatile they really are.

Let's work on the savory cheesy ones first and then i'll give you ideas to keep trying :)

Ingredients:

Makes about 12

Dipping Sauce Recipe:

Directions

  1. Bring water to a boil in a saucepan and stir in sugar, butter, and salt until sugar has dissolved. Turn heat to low and whisk in 1 cup of cornmeal until smooth. Stir in remaining 1/2 cup cornmeal to make a very thick, workable dough. OR most of the time what I do is put the corn meal in a bowl and slowly add the boiling water. Must better and safer that way you can gradually add and check for texture.
  2. Heat 2 or 3 cups frying oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease your hands well with 2 teaspoons of oil and scoop about 3 tablespoons of cornmeal dough; roll the dough into a ball, then shape into a 3-inch long stick about 1/2 inch wide OR make them into balls as I did on my photo on the top :) . Repeat with remaining dough, oiling your hands as needed. Deep-fry the cornmeal sticks until golden brown, working in batches of 3 or 4 at a time. Drain fried cornmeal sticks on paper towels and keep warm.

This is how golden and they will some what look. Unless you are making them round.

Directions for Dipping Sauce:
  1. Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and garlic salt in a bowl until well combined; serve cornmeal sticks with the sauce for dipping.

Note: Fillings & Ways to Eat

Ok that is the original plain recipe. Below I am going to give you ideas to fill them in with various things. Also, I'll provide you with ways to eat them.

When you are molding them add a piece of your choice of cheese. I personally love MOZARELLA. But, that is my choice you can add which ever cheese that obviously melts lol

If you want Sweet Sorullitos add 3/4 cup of white sugar instead of 3 to 6 tbs.

IDEAS:

1) You can add Guava Paste and cut it into chunks and add it in the middle instead of cheese

2) OR Hey, why not? White cheese with Guava. This is typical also in Puerto Rico inside of "Pastelitos!" Mozzarella Cheese with Guava is the best of both worlds!

DIP:

Recipe on top:

You can make them (the sorullos) with the dip above or dip them with this...

Yes! The next time to make beans save some for Sorullitos to be dipped in. YUM!!

Enjoy!
